I As the Nation's principal conservation agency, the Department of the Interior has responsibility for most of our nationally owned public lands and natural resources. This includes fostering the wisest use of our land and water resources, protecting our fish and wildlife, preserving the environmental and cultural values of our national parks and historical places, and providing for the enjoyment of life through outdoor recrea- tion. The contents of these documents cover the water- related aspects of the life, physical, and social sciences as well as related engi- neering and legal aspects of the characteristics, conservation, control, use, or management of water. Each abstract includes a full bibliographical citation and a set of descriptors or identifiers which are listed in the Water Resources Thesaurus (Second Edition, 1971). Each abstract entry is classified into ten fields and sixty groups similar to the water resources research categories established by the Committee on Water Resources Research of the Federal Council for Science and Technology.
